From May 19 to 20, 2025, representatives from the elevator industry met for the 21st time at the Schwelm Symposium. The approximately 120 participants were able to listen to 18 specialist presentations, visit the trade exhibition, and engage in discussions at the pre-event event and during the breaks. The date and a new venue for 2026 have already been confirmed.

Cybersecurity: Draft standards with massive consequences

The draft of Part 20 of the ISO 8102 series on cybersecurity for elevators and escalators (Electrical requirements for lifts, escalators and moving walks) was recently published. Tim Ebeling, Managing Director of the elevator measuring device manufacturer Henning, is the representative of VFA-Interlift on the "Digitalization and Cyber Security" committee of the European Lift Association (ELA). We asked him for his assessment of the draft.

Ride quality measurements and monitoring of escalators and moving walks

Correct measurement instead of subjective feeling is the starting point for a correct diagnosis. This sentence was used in 2005 to
ISO 18 was introduced for measuring the ride quality of elevators. The latest revision of this standard has now published Part 738, which deals with the objective ride quality measurement of escalators and moving walks. Vibration data from the load carriers and handrails are collected and evaluated together with sound pressure levels to provide a quantifiable representation of human perception during escalator use.

One sensor for all suspension devices

The donut load sensors were developed to accommodate the ever-shrinking installation space in elevators. The sensor is mounted in the rope suspension (dead center) together with the elastomer spring buffers or compression springs, making them suitable even for very small shaft heads. It doesn't matter whether the sensors are conventional steel ropes or belts.
